The ex-manager of ‘Price Tag’ singer Jessie J is claiming entitlement to 20% of her
earnings for life after he discovered the Essex-born star and helped her through a teenage
voyage of ‘self discovery.’
Stevenson claimed that he discovered the singer-songwriter eight years ago when she
was just 15 and helped her to find a major record label deal in the US after British music
companies turned her down.
He continued: ‘We took her round to major record labels, they weren’t sure and didn’t quite
get it. It took a while to get the record labels’ ears and we eventually took her America to
speak to executives out there.
‘Five years is a long time to develop someone and I’m glad she is reaping the rewards of
what we have done.
‘What we do is a lot more holistic than just singing, it is about self-discovery. It is about
getting the person to be the best they can be and project great vocals and emotions.’
Stevenson argues that the 20% share appears in the management contract that was
drawn up when he first started working with Jessie J.
He add that the singer’s currently management company, Universal Republic and Crown
Management, have accepted the original contract’s terms, although neither party was
available for comment today.
Stevenson first met the 23 year-old star whilst searching for singers to increase the profile
of a nationwide anti-gun organisation in the US.
Jessie J attended the Brit School in Croydon at the same time as fellow solo artist Adele
and burst onto the pop scene in 2010 with her debut single Do It Like A Dude. Her debut
album, Who You Are, reached number two in the UK music charts and number 11 in the
US.
