Sarah Ferguson has been condemned as ‘tragic’ today after revealing on American
TV that she had found it ‘difficult’ to miss out on Prince William and Kate’s wedding.
The Duchess of York, 51, told chat host Oprah Winfrey that following the snub she
spent April 29th in Thailand.
‘The jungle embraced me,’ she said.
‘It was so difficult. Because I wanted to be there with my girls … and to be getting
them dressed and to go as a family.’
Her ex-husband the Duke of York, who accompanied their daughters Beatrice, 22,
and Eugenie, 21, to Westminster Abbey, made her feel part of the occasion by
talking to her on the telephone. The Duchess told Oprah that she:
‘really loved the feeling that Diana and I both weren’t there’.
She also said Andrew made her feel part of the wedding celebrations by reminding
her of their own Westminster Abbey marriage ceremony in 1986.
‘It was also hard because the last bride up that aisle was me.’
However today Andrew Morton, author of Diana: Her True Story, said on Twitter:
‘Saving Sarah Ferguson from herself is a task that would even defeat Oprah. What a
tragic, pathetic figure she now is.’
It is rumoured that the Duchess was cut from the guest list after being caught on
camera offering access to her ex-husband for £500,000 last year. When asked on the
show whether she felt rejected by the Royal family, the Duchess replied:
‘I felt I ostracised myself by my behaviour. I went through the phase of feeling so
totally worthless and that it was quite right they didn’t invite me.”
The show’s American viewers were more sympathetic, with one posting on Oprah’s
website: ‘Way to go Fergie! You are a survivor from the abuse of the royals.’
