John Bercow, the House of Commons Speaker, ‘wasn’t very pleased’ to see his wife enter
the new Big Brother house, he has admitted.
In the film shown before her Big Brother arrival, Sally Bercow revealed that her husband
was ‘not exactly chuffed’ about her decision to appear on the revamped reality show.
Bercow said she accepted the offer to join the celebrity house not only to ‘stick two fingers
up to the Establishment’ but also to raise £100,000 for the charity Ambitious About Autism.
Before entering the purpose-built house in Elstree Studios last night, Bercow also said that
her husband attempted to deter her from starring on the Channel 5 show, but argued: ‘The
very fact I’m on here proves he hasn’t succeeded.
‘I hope he doesn’t divorce me over it.
‘I am not my husband.’
Bercow was also criticised earlier this year after a newspaper featured a photoshoot in
which she wore nothing but a bedsheet. At the show’s launch, Big Brother host Brian
Dowling asked how her husband felt about her decision to appear.
‘He’s not exactly chuffed about it,’ she replied.
‘He wasn’t very pleased, but he does know what I’m like.
‘He respects the fact that I do my own thing.’
Other celebrities to join the house were veteran reality star Kerry Katona, American
actress Tara Reid, Amy Childs from ITV2′s The Only Way Is Essex, photo agency boss
Darryn Lyons, actor Lucien Laviscount, model Bobby Sabel, David Hasselhoff’s former
wife Pamela Bach Hasselhoff and Paddy Doherty, of Channel 4′s My Big Fat Gypsy
Wedding.
The final contestants to enter the celebrity house were twins John and Edward Grimes,
known as Jedward, who cartwheeled down the runway wearing tiger-print jackets.
